19 - Christmas Day with a difference

Updated: 6 days ago

This year we invited a bunch of friends in for Seafood and Champers. Guests were asked to come around midday after they put the turkey in the oven. It was surprising how many people were only too delighted to get out of their homes for a few hours on Christmas day.

We sourced our fish and shellfish from East Coast Seafoods in Naas. And while this was excellent in as far as it went, it was, however, a bit limiting and we could have done a lot better had we shopped around a bit more. We ordered oysters x 50, mussels x 50, 1lb of Dublin Bay prawns and a side of smoked salmon. They had no crab claws, and the oysters were closed, the shucking was left entirely to us. We had neither the skill nor the time for this task and besides many people simply did not like oysters. Had we tried Lidl’s for example they would have had crab claws and opened oysters, and we would have spared ourselves an awful lot of grief.

But one lives and learns. All in all, our Yuletide gathering was a great success such that we’ll try it again, but next time a lot wiser.
