20 - This Christmas

Updated: Dec 30, 2024

Today, we had lunch at our local alehouse, Cooke’s of Carragh (Co.Kildare). We could not believe how busy the place was. A lot of people had the same idea as us, obviously. But besides, this place has, over the last five years, built a reputation for itself for offering excellent food, service and value. Consistently. This level of excellence does not come by chance but needs to be worked at with dedication and a single-mindedness not often found. Such excellence will find its rewards. Their seafood chowder, for example, is to die for.

It used to be called Coffey’s of Carragh and was an iconic watering hole and landmark between Naas and Allenwood. I used to cycle by here every day on my way into CBS Naas. Here, Pat Coffey would join me for the second leg of this journey. That was in the early 1950’s. Two hardy lads pursuing their education. My only gripe with Cooke’s of Carragh is that they should never have changed the name. In changing a place's name, you risk erasing its history and character.

For afters, I had my typical Irish Coffee with a drop of Jameson's Whiskey
